Cutting & Drilling Near Hidden Wiring

Carpenters, plumbers, HVAC techs, drywallers and demolition crews regularly cut into walls, floors and ceilings that hide live wiring. A saw blade or drill bit that hits a live cable can energize the tool, start a fire or cause an arc flash.

Where wiring usually runs

But older buildings, remodels and DIY work often break these patterns. Assume wiring can be anywhere.

Before you cut or drill

Demolition

See Demolition.

If you hit a wire: let go of the tool if you can, don’t touch any metal part, and get the circuit shut off at the panel. Don’t touch anyone being shocked until the power is off. Have an electrician inspect and repair the damage; a nicked cable can start a fire later. Get medical care after any shock. See Electrical Injuries.

Don’t forget pipes

The same walls hide gas, water and drain lines. Hitting a gas line is an emergency: leave, don’t operate switches, and call 911 and the gas company from outside.
