Eyewash Stations & Emergency Showers

When a corrosive chemical like concrete, battery acid, caustic cleaners or solvents splashes into your eyes or onto your body, the first seconds matter. Flushing right away with lots of water limits the damage.

When they’re required

Where a worker’s eyes or body may be exposed to corrosive materials, facilities for quick drenching or flushing must be provided in the immediate work area. Battery charging areas, chemical mixing and concrete work are common examples.

Good eyewash stations (ANSI Z358.1)

How to use an eyewash

  1. Get to the eyewash immediately, with help if needed.
  2. Hold your eyelids open with your fingers and roll your eyes.
  3. Flush for at least 15 minutes (longer for some chemicals; check the SDS).
  4. Remove contact lenses while flushing if you can.
  5. Get medical attention. Bring the SDS.
