Insulated Hand Tools (1000V)

Insulated hand tools have tested, layered insulation that protects the user if the tool touches an energized part. They’re required for qualified workers who must work near exposed live parts. A tool with a rubbery “comfort grip” is not the same thing.

How to recognize a real insulated tool

Dipped or cushion-grip handles are not insulated tools. They’re for comfort only and may say “not for electrical work.” Don’t trust them near live parts.

When they’re required

Insulated tools are a backup, not a plan. The first choice is always to de-energize, lock out and test before touching. See Lockout/Tagout.

Inspect before every use

Damaged insulated tools can’t be repaired by taping. Take them out of service and replace them.
