Room-by-room fixes
- Floors: remove or tape down loose rugs; clear cords, clutter and shoes from walkways
- Stairs: sturdy handrails on both sides, good lighting with switches at top and bottom, non-slip treads
- Bathroom: grab bars by the toilet and in the tub or shower, non-slip mats, a shower chair if needed
- Bedroom: nightlights between the bed and bathroom; a lamp within reach of the bed
- Kitchen: store everyday items at waist-to-shoulder height so you don’t need a step stool
- Outside: fix uneven walkways and steps; clear ice, snow and wet leaves; light entryways
Personal steps
- Do strength and balance exercises (like tai chi).
- Ask a doctor or pharmacist to review medicines that cause dizziness.
- Get your eyes checked yearly.
- Wear supportive shoes indoors and out, not socks or loose slippers.
