Ventilation & Local Exhaust

Ventilation is an engineering control that removes or dilutes airborne contaminants before workers breathe them. Used well, it can make respirators unnecessary. Used badly, it blows dust into someone else’s face or does nothing at all.

Two main types

TypeHow it worksBest for
Local exhaust ventilation (LEV)A hood, shroud or nozzle captures contaminants right at the source and ducts them to a filter or outsideWelding fume, grinding and cutting dust, solvent vapors at a bench, spray booths
General (dilution) ventilationFans move large amounts of fresh air through a space to dilute contaminantsLow-toxicity contaminants, heat, and supporting LEV; not enough on its own for toxic dust or fume
