Food Processing Plant Safety

Food plants mix sharp tools, powerful machines, wet floors, cold rooms and strong cleaning chemicals, often on fast lines and night shifts. Many of the worst injuries happen not during production but during cleaning, when workers reach into machines to sanitize them.

Machines

Sanitation and lockout

Sanitation crews take guards off and put hands and bodies inside equipment, often at night with fewer people around. OSHA has cited many plants after sanitation workers were killed or lost limbs.

Contract sanitation companies must follow the same rules, and the host plant must share its lockout procedures with them.

Knives and cuts

Wet floors, cold and heat

Chemicals

Repetitive motion and dust

Young workers

Federal child labor rules bar workers under 18 from running or cleaning many power-driven food machines, including meat slicers and many mixers and grinders. See Young Workers.
